What are metrics for remote learning?

After attending the July 30 Arlington Heights School District 25 Board of Education meeting regarding Dr. Lori Bein's remote learning plan, we walked away with more questions than answers.

The most important unanswered question that needs to be addressed are the metrics to move beyond remote learning. Currently, District 25 is entering the 2020-2021 school year with no metrics in place. Her plans include a yet-underdetermined advisory committee that will meet for the first time Aug. 31, 2020, the day before school starts. This Committee will be choosing metrics for reopening schools. Who will be on this committee? Does Dr. Bein hand-pick members? Does the board have input into this committee? The superintendent and the board of education have had since March 13 to come up with many options for learning this fall. Starting the school year with no metrics for moving beyond remote learning is not acceptable.

By her own admission, Dr. Bein made the decision for full remote learning. What role did the school board play in the decision-making process? Did the board counsel her and hold her accountable? What is her responsibility to taxpayers? The public has no direct information as to the role the Board played in this most important decision; will they have input moving forward?

While there are still many unanswered questions, Dr. Bein and the board have yet to define "robust learning." They are remiss in their duties allowing vague jargon to define school which starts in less than a month. Based on a lack of relevant questions and answers, we can only surmise, the board of education is a rubber stamp for Dr. Bein and her team.
