Remove dam to guard water safety

The Sierra Club appreciates the sense of history associated with the Graue Mill at the Fullersburg Forest Preserve, but has serious concerns about the concrete dam that impounds the water to the detriment of water quality and wildlife. The dam blocks fish passage and causes low oxygen levels in stagnant water, and it causes conditions that negatively impact the ecology of the stream.

Given the ecological harm it causes, and the cost about to be imposed on the taxpayer by state and federal environmental requirements, the Sierra Club supports removal of the dam. After years of careful study of all options, removing the dam is a more effective option for addressing local water quality issues. Adding expensive equipment to wastewater treatment plants that burdens taxpayers will not achieve the goal of restoring the Salt Creek.

History has not been static at this site, and restoring the waterway to a more natural feature will be another chapter in the ongoing story of our beloved Graue Mill. This site has seen numerous changes over time. The dam is not original, and never really served the mill's operation, despite misinformation to the contrary.

This dam was not used to mill grain; that was done by other means. Let's look forward to renewed public interest in the history of the mill, which will remain fully preserved, along with the raceway. Many visitors will come to appreciate the natural beauty of a restored natural area that will be over a mile in length, and the wonderful sound of rippling water.
