Making the case for Underwood
As we all struggle with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, citizens of Illinois's 14th congressional district can be proud of the effort congresswoman Lauren Underwood is making on the national level. As an expert in public health, she has worked diligently to understand and meet the public health needs this pandemic has created.
This work has included seeking input and securing federal funding to support the work of local health care professionals as well as state and local public health officials. .
As a retired health care professional, I am impressed with Lauren's ability to listen and quickly recognize issues that need her and Congress' attention.
Lauren has blown past expectations for a freshman member of Congress, introducing 12 bills of her own and even getting two signed into law.
On Martin Luther King Day, I had the privilege to attend a showing of the film "Just Mercy" Lauren organized.
The film follows the life of Bryan Stevenson, a world-renowned civil rights attorney, as he works to free a wrongly condemned prisoner on death row. This viewing included a discussion after the film with representatives of local advocacy groups working to address criminal justice issues here at home.
Voters have the opportunity to reelect this talented and energetic young leader, and they should.
