Pandemic is chance to rethink taxation

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced all of us to reconsider the way we work and live. It should also give us an opportunity to rethink the way our communities, cities and state are run. One area that's ready for reform is our state tax system, which is why I am supporting the Fair Tax amendment on the ballot this November.

More than 30 states and the federal government already have a Fair Tax system, where higher earners pay higher rates and lower earners pay lower rates. In Illinois, the Fair Tax means the 97% of us who make less than $250,000 a year will get a tax cut or pay no more than we do now, while the top 3% who make more than $250,000 a year will see a tax increase. That means more money in the pockets of working people who are struggling in the pandemic crisis and more resources for the critical services that are desperately needed right now.

Our unfair tax system has placed too much of the burden on the middle class for too long. It's time for us to reform our tax system and join the majority of states and the federal government in instituting a Fair Tax system. Please join me in voting Yes for the Fair Tax amendment in November and let's come together to strengthen our state for the future.
