Celebrate nurses

On May 12, we celebrate the 200th birthday of Florence Nightingale. Not celebrating? Perhaps you should, especially now. Nightingale is the mother of modern nursing, who took her experiences in the Crimean War and turned them into a passion for improving hospitals and healthcare, and her work laid the foundation for educating nurses and recognizing their critical role in caring for both the sick and the healthy.

This week we honor all nurses by celebrating Nurses Week. Never has there been a clearer demonstration of the importance of nursing than through this pandemic. Nurses fill important roles not just in caring for the sick, but also in keeping people healthy, making healthcare facilities better and shaping policy that improves everyone's health.

We at the Family Health Partnership Clinic are grateful for our amazing nurses who care for our patients every day, and for all of the other nurses in our community who work to make this a better place to live. Nursing roles are much bigger than Nightingale would have ever imagined, and I think she would be absolutely delighted. Happy Nurses Week!
