Governors are leading

As I spend part of my day listening to our leaders update us on the progress of our battle against the coronavirus, I am amazed and disgruntled by the stark differences in the presentations by New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, Illinois Gov. J. B. Pritzker and President Donald Trump. Both these governors show a remarkable comprehension of the danger we face. They have knowledge of what needs to be done and how to do it. They are both articulate and respond well to questions. They have a grasp of the situation and informed ideas about what we should do going forward.

Trump shows he is singularly uninformed and totally ignorant of the threat we face. He seems to have no empathy for those suffering, and feels that we should prioritize economic issues over people. He is completely lacking in ideas and unaccepting of the major role the federal government should be playing in this crisis.

He says he "feels" that we are overstating the danger. When asking questions about how each issue should be addressed, he attacks those asking the questions and resorts to calling those who disagree with him derogatory names.

I can't help but wish that our president were Gov. Cuomo or Gov. Pritzker. Either one would give me confidence that we would be able to get through this crisis and come out of it a stronger and better informed nation.

I can only hope that the next presidential election results in a victory for an individual who is up to the challenge. We don't need four more years of a reality show celebrity who knows little about the job, refuses to learn or maybe is unable to learn, and only wants to feed his ego and to destroy others who don't worship at his feet.

I fear for the future of our democracy if Donald Trump is reelected president of the United States.
