On the people's will

I am tired of Trump supporters expressing their outrage that the Democrats impeached the president to "overturn the results of the election" and "undo the will of the people."

Please remember that "the will of the people" in 2016 was to elect Hillary Clinton, who received 3 million more votes than Trump. More accurate would be to say "the will of the Electoral College."

Furthermore, if the "results of the election" could be overturned by removing Trump from office, Hillary Clinton would be president, the makeup of the Supreme Court might be different by now, and President Clinton would be busy repairing relations and reestablishing trust with our allies by supporting NATO, re-entering the Paris Climate Agreement and the Iran nuclear deal. She would perhaps impose sanctions on Russia for interfering in the 2016 elections and hire experts to combat their ongoing interference in the 2020 election. Our national parks and monuments would be safe from being carved up for business interests and free from industrial pollutants.

In truth, if Trump had been removed, we would have a President Pence, Gorsuch and Kavanaugh would still be on the Supreme Court, and most likely Pence would continue Trump's foreign and domestic policies. A woman's right to choose would still be peril and big business would still be dictating environmental policy, including denial of climate change science.

Debra J. Saunders implies in her column of Feb. 11 that Sen. Mitt Romney is a hypocrite for accepting Trump's support in the past while voting to convict him in the Senate impeachment trial. Perhaps Romney was voting, as he stated, as his religious conscious demanded; that he was voting to remove Trump for his actions in this case, not necessarily condemning him as a person. I call that integrity, not hypocrisy.
