A questionable view on tax fairness

We live in a time where responsible consumers of news need to be very cautious of their sources of information. A recent Daily Herald Opinion Page article underscores this need. The headline "Out-migration and unfair tax system" aptly hints at the submitted content that makes a case for support of state income tax reform (code for the states" need to collect more revenues) under the poorly veiled guise of "fairness."

First, we must ask what qualifies the pieces' writer to be an objective arbiter of "fair?" Quentin Fulks, pictured under the headline, is described at the bottom of the column as "Chairman of Vote Yes For Fairness, a ballot initiative committee working to pass the Fair Tax in Illinois." Mr. Fulks was formerly Gov. Pritzker's deputy campaign manager, leaving one to wonder how objective Mr. Fulks can be in determining what is "fair."

He's clearly working to convince people to either willingly part with more of their own earned money, or to approve Illinois government to grab more from others so that his boss has more at his disposal.

If we accept Mr. Fulks' view as objective, we might expect to be reading pieces in the Daily Herald provided by the executive director of some benevolent sounding agency intended to reduce our real estate taxes who was formerly in the toilet removal business.
