Consider natural warming in the oceans

Regarding the Opinion page Sept. 30.: Thank you to George Barney and William Loftus for your letters about climate change and to the Daily Herald for printing them. I would like to add that marine geophysicists aboard the research vessel Melville discovered 1,133 previously unmapped underwater volcanoes 600 miles northwest of Easter Island, which is about 2,300 miles west of Chile. These volcanoes are packed into an area of 55,000 square miles, the size of New York state.

The scientists were shocked. They thought they would find a few dozen, but now they have no idea how many there are. They say it's up for grabs since only about 5% of the ocean floor has been mapped in detail.

These volcanoes are putting awesome amounts of red hot basalt and plumes of superheated water at almost 800 degrees into the oceans.
