Trucking lobby won out in capital bill

I had a good laugh reading the letter from the highly paid lobbyist for the Illinois trucking industry, published in the June 15 Daily Herald.

He applauds the governor and the Illinois legislature for passing an outrageous increase in the gasoline tax and other motor vehicle-related fees to fix the roads in our state. Roads that he says are broken and badly in need of repair. No question about that, but who caused most of that damage?

I would say it was all those heavy trucks racing across our state, pounding our roads to pieces.

I think it's only fair that the truckers should pay for the damage to our roads and bridges. Their contribution to paying for the repairs is a 5 cents-a-gallon increase in the tax on diesel fuel. Car drivers will be paying an additional tax of 19 cents a gallon for fuel. Fair and equitable? I don't think so.
