Soapbox: Kudos, criticisms and other observations from Daily Herald editors

Here is this week's collection of brief editorial observations from Daily Herald editors.

Basking in the glory, Part 1

It's probably only natural that in the euphoria of victory at the end of an intense political campaign, people might say some things they'd self-edit at a less emotional moment.

Basking in the glory, Part 2

We assume that was the case with newly re-elected Buffalo Grove Village President Beverly Sussman and newly elected Rolling Meadows Mayor Joe Gallo, who both took needless postelection shots at adversaries when as community leaders, they should have been extending olive branches.

Basking in the glory, Part 3

That said, both no doubt have learned from the experiences. In her case, Sussman has apologized. They're good, well-meaning people, but imperfect as all of us are. On all sides: It's time to let it go, move on and work together for the good of the communities.

All the answers

Don't bet against James Holzhauer. The Naperville North alumnus, now a professional sports gambler in Las Vegas, broke the single-game record for winnings on "Jeopardy!" - winning $110,914 in Tuesday's broadcast. The 34-year-old's mark shattered Roger Craig's previous record of $77,000, which stood for nearly nine years. Very impressive.

Still reining in pensions

Decades into Illinois' pension crisis, it's astonishing that we still need a law to stop some public employees from collecting pensions while holding another government job and working toward another public pension. A bill by state Rep. Grant Wehrli of Naperville to ban the practice for firefighters passed the House. We urge the Senate to pass it too.

Start seeing ...

... motorcyclists, bicyclists, construction workers, joggers, kids at play. They all come out when the weather gets warm, and they all have a right to the road. Share it, slow down, give a wide berth.

Speaking of bicyclists ...

A reader complained to our Marni Pyke about bicyclists riding on Springinsguth Road instead of the sidewalk. It's true, the sidewalk on the east side of Schaumburg is a designated bike route, but it's too narrow and dangerous itself with pedestrians. The real solution: Ride north-south Braintree Drive instead; there's less traffic and it has a bike lane.

Down the drain:

Lake County's nine drainage districts are little known and perhaps even less understood by the taxpayers who foot their bills. So we applaud the Lake County Board for taking a close look at whether they can be consolidated.

Cantigny's First Division Museum, Part 1

We salute the vision Krewasky Salter has for the First Division Museum at Cantigny Park in Wheaton. As the new executive director, Salter says he wants the institution to be "among the best, if not the best" military museums in America.

Cantigny's First Division Museum, Part 2

The museum became a suburban gem under Salter's predecessor, Paul Herbert. Now Salter, who has done work at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, wants to take it even further. We can hardly wait.

Remembering Mike Schoepke

We say farewell at memorial services this morning for one of our own, longtime computer ops director Mike Schoepke, one of a long line of Schoepkes who made Paddock Publications his life's work. He had a gentle smile that could light up a room.
