Extension unnecessary

I was very surprised to read recently that Reps. Casten and Underwood have co-sponsored legislation to move the tax filing deadline from the traditional April 15 to May 20.

I am an enrolled agent in my 36th year of professional tax return preparation. This tax season has gone very smoothly and has not been impacted by the government shutdown in any way. I have not met one person who said that the government shutdown has impacted their ability to file their tax return on time.

There is absolutely no need to extend the filing deadline to May 20.
