Endorsements: Batson, Hessel, Rooney for Libertyville-Vernon Hills Area High School District 128
Libertyville-Vernon Hills Area High School District 128. is in strong financial shape and enjoys a reputation that ranks it among the best school systems in the state and the nation.
The formula for such a high degree of success is something worth preserving, and it would seem to be in good hands with the three incumbents seeking to retain the three school board positions open on the April 2 ballot.
James Batson, 61, a technology director with advanced degrees in education and educational leadership, has served on the District 128 board since 2011. Importantly, he notes that the district can't rest on its laurels and will require continued work and visionary leadership to maintain its academic standards.
Katherine "Casey" Rooney, 52, and Lisa Hessel, 48, were appointed to the board at different times last year. Both have been involved with education and District 128 beyond their school board experiences and they have quickly gotten up to speed to become energetic, constructive members of the district's leadership team.
This is not to discount the potential of two additional candidates seeking election. Elizabeth "Liz" Bruckner, 47, has been involved with the Libertyville Junior Woman's Club and the Libertyville Days Committee, and she demonstrates particular sensitivity to the needs and interests of taxpayers. Loubna Kiliouine, 43, is a project manager who stresses the values of communication and diversity. They are both able candidates who hold the promise of being effective board members.
But the three incumbents bring a high level of authority, experience and insight to the board. With the district facing the continuing uncertainties of state funding and a specific challenge of expanding one of its high schools to meet increased enrollment demands, these are important qualities to stick with. We endorse Batson, Hessel and Rooney.
