Endorsements: Geheren, Gentry, Walker and Griskey for Huntley District 158 school board

Huntley Community School District 158 has seen a steady rise in student enrollment and stabilization of the finances over the past few years.

The Board Of Education has kept the budget in check the cost per pupil low.

Three members of that board are facing off against two challengers for four 4-year seats in the April 2 election. Incumbents William Geheren, Kevin Gentry and Ra'Shawn Walker are running against newcomers Melissa Maiorino and Timothy Griskey. Longtime board member Anthony Quagliano is running uncontested for a two-year term.

Walker was appointed to the board last year following the resignation of board president Don Drzal. The Lake in the Hills resident, who has children in district schools, served in the U.S. Army National Gurard.

Geheren, a former teacher with children in District 158 schools, focuses on communication through Huntley Community Radio and as a member of the Community Relations Committee.

Huntley resident Gentry, a board member since 2007, is in financial services. He has worked through budgetary challenges during his time as member of the board and says the district has done a good job planning for the future.

That will be tested.

The district is predicted to see a decline in student population. There has already been a decrease in the number of students attending the elementary level.

Algonquin resident Griskey says this is a turning point for the board. The parent of a District 158 student, he has kept an eye on the finances and says the board needs to take into account the changes ahead. His experience in the banking industry will offer a level of oversight and fiscal responsibility.

Geheren, Gentry and Walker will continue taking the district in the right direction and Griskey will complement this diverse group.

We endorse Geheren, Gentry, Walker and Griskey for Huntley District 158 school board.
