Lisle village board: Cawiezel, Goldenberg, Olson

Lisle voters will choose from among seven candidates to fill three seats on a village board dealing with sharp political divisions in philosophy, approach and vision.

The good news is that all seven hopefuls - incumbents Mark Patrick Boyle and Cathy Cawiezel and newcomers Claire Goldenberg, Michael Olson, Charles Rego, Sara Sayed Sadat and Stephen Winz - are thoughtful, well-spoken and knowledgeable about issues.

But the real challenge facing the board, and the candidates voters pick on April 2, is to find common ground where politics can be pushed aside to allow the village to focus on addressing redevelopment in downtown and elsewhere, flooding and transparency.

That will not be easy in the current political climate and at a time when the village is dealing with significant turnover of high-level administrators. And that's why, in a deep and talented field where a case could be made for each candidate, it's important to choose those most likely to build bridges.

With a long history of community involvement with the Woman's Club, Heritage Society and Friends of the Library, Cawiezel, a controller, has demonstrated her independence since joining the board in 2011, casting votes based on issues rather than politics. Olson, a commercial banker and park district commissioner for the past two years, has a firm grasp of the issues and recognizes the importance of gathering community feedback and providing a clear vision for the staff to pursue. We were impressed by Goldenberg's passion and intelligence when she ran unsuccessfully in last year's Democratic primary for a county board seat and even more so this winter when the business owner stressed the need for more outreach efforts to attract residents and businesses.

Cawiezel, Goldenberg and Olson are endorsed.

Claire Goldenberg
