Endorsement for Streamwood village board: Cecille, Haque, Thon

Four candidates are running for three trustee positions on the Streamwood village board - three incumbents and entrepreneur Rezwanul Haque.

Jim Cecille is a longtime trustee who twice over the years ran unsuccessfully for village president against Billie Roth but still seems able to work constructively with her. Knowledgeable and responsive, he first was elected to the village board in 1987.

Mary Thon, first elected to the board in 2011, is an educator who says she applies her ability to do research to her responsibilities on the village board. Collaborative and fiscally conservative, Thon is particularly proud of her work on the Community Relations Commission, which improves human relations in town while valuing the diverse cultures in the community.

Retiree Lawrence Schmidt has been on the board for two years, since he won a write-in campaign in 2017.

This election is a rematch of sorts because Haque lost that 2017 write-in contest after his name was tossed from the ballot following a challenge to his nominating petitions.

On the ballot this time, Haque is energetic and civic-minded and would no doubt be an able trustee.

Schmidt declined to be interviewed by our Editorial Board or to complete a candidate questionnaire, which struck us as an odd disinclination for transparency.

Our endorsements go to Cecille, Haque and Thon.
