Working together is key to solution

President Donald Trump is correct. When I see the Angel Families, my heart breaks. Crime and outright murder by illegal immigrants, or anyone, is an absolute tragedy and something that must be countered by strong border security.

With that said, I do not believe that fundamental problems are solved by simple solutions. However, if a wall is built and helps to deter these horrors, it will be a victory for our nation.

Personally, I do not believe a wall will do it. Another wall? In addition to the other walls we have built around ourselves and the divides we have constructed against each other? Other presidents have constructed walls and fences and the problem of illegal immigration remains.

Our nation has the ability to stop these atrocities; whether it be human trafficking or innocent Americans being killed by illegal immigrants. We will have to work with the countries from which people are fleeing and encourage their right to development by embracing democratic practices and the free market.

Unfortunately, it will be impossible to realize peace in our nation if we fail to solve our true state of emergency: political polarization and what it has done to us. President Donald Trump's presidential emergency, a purely executive response, fails to respond to the problems in our country with the full might and wisdom of the American nation.

If we choose to work together we will live to see a brighter day. Congress must stand up and compromise with the president. Through Congress, every state and congressional district is given a voice. Only legislative action, the president's signature and the strength of the American people, together, will solve the problem of illegal immigration and the turbulent times that lie ahead.
