Reality check

In his letter, "We need immigrants in workforce," Mr. Conley tries to justify immigrant caravans as helping satisfy a shortage of skilled and unskilled workers and equating their number to that of retiring Baby Boomers leaving the workforce.

He gives as examples the shortage of commercial airline pilots and over-the-road truck drivers. According to readily available statistics, citizens of El Salvador have an average of five years of education versus 12 years in the U.S., and have a car ownership rate of 94 cars per 1,000 people versus 910 per 1,000 in the U.S.

Does Mr. Conley really want under-educated people with little driving experience to be piloting airplanes and driving semi's on our highways?
