District 21 security referendum is right for kids, community

We live in a time of unprecedented violence, including in our schools. As a parent of two District 21 graduates and a teacher at a local high school, I worry each day about the safety of my children, my students and the other young people in this community.

Passing this referendum will allow our district to provide additional security at all of our schools.

While the administration and staff in District 21 have done what they can, each building will continue to have major security concerns if not renovated. This referendum will provide the schools with funding to construct a single public entrance which is locked and bullet-resistant, and update security cameras and lighting.

In addition to security concerns, the lack of air conditioning plays a underrecognized role in safety. Security is hindered if windows and doors are propped opened to alleviate heat.

Also, extreme temperatures harm students' health and their ability to learn. We can't ask our staff to teach and kids to learn in that type of environment.

I write you today to stress the importance of saying YES to the referendum. Using additional funding from the community, every school will have enhanced security, improved energy efficiency, air conditioning, classrooms ready for full-day kindergarten, and a 21st century learning environment to better prepare our students for life beyond school.

To voters who are undecided or leaning toward "no," please consider the value that is being offered against the small individual cost to you. Place yourself in the shoes of the staff and children. Learning can best take place when everyone feels safe, is physically comfortable, and can focus on the day's lessons.

When District 21 becomes a school district of choice, the small sacrifices our community makes now will be rewarded with higher home values and a stronger, more robust local economy.
