Taking change farther

I am encouraged that the Daily Herald recognizes the need for change in the Illinois Secretary of State role.

Jesse White was an innovator in the past, but new blood is needed. That is exactly why Libertarian Party candidate Steve Dutner deserves more attention and support. Like the Herald's endorsed candidate, Jason Helland, Dutner would cut bureaucracy and bring in new technology. Dutner would go farther, however, by taking a page from 18 other states that have privatized some or all driver's services functions. He would help our economy by cutting fees for small businesses and reducing red tape for commercial licenses. Importantly, he would bring about justice for poor people by eliminating the unfair practice of suspending driver's licenses for those with unpaid private debt.

It is time for Illinois citizens to look beyond the tired rhetoric of the two major parties and consider innovations brought by truly independent candidates of third parties.
