Endorsement: Daily Herald endorses Mazzochi over Caffrey in Illinois House District 47

House Dist. 47: Mazzochi

Elmhurst Republican Deanne Mazzochi, appointed this summer to fill Patti Bellock's term in Illinois House District 47, is a conservative who takes a sensible approach to controlling state spending.

We're impressed by her intellect, and her legal training has made her a tough and skilled negotiator. We have confidence that she would be willing to question and stand up to power in Springfield.

When she became the chairwoman of the College of DuPage board, a position she vows to resign if elected to a full term as state representative, she said her main task was to get the school off the front pages.

She did that. While we haven't always agreed with her, we credit her, in particular, for the wise choice of retired Vice Admiral Ann Rondeau to shepherd the college.

Mazzochi faces Democrat Jim Caffrey of Elmhurst in the Nov. 6 election. While we admire Caffrey's independence, we endorse Mazzochi.
