Threat to women's reproductive rights
An opinion piece in the Chicago Sun Times on Sept. 12 asserts that Brett Kavanaugh has "earned women's support." The author's reasoning is based on how he has hired "record" numbers of women during his career, regardless of their points of view.
If he indeed has given women the opportunity to work in his office and other government offices, I give him credit. Where I do not give him credit is on his often shaky responses when asked questions about the all-important issue for women across the nation: the right for a woman to control her own body.
Women exert this control when they are allowed to choose if and when they have a baby. This involves access to reliable birth control and safe abortions, if all else fails.
Those women who want to take part in work outside the home, often face attitudes from men and women, alike, who think their work should be limited to reproduction and home duties.
The women whom Kavanaugh claims to have hired in astounding numbers are only able to take part in those opportunities if they do not have to worry about unplanned pregnancies. Dependable contraceptives and safe abortions in case of need for health or other reasons, are necessary for women to take advantage of the opportunities given.
The women of America need a Supreme Court whose members will fight for their right to fully participate in the American democracy and economy.
The right of women to control their own bodies is necessary and nonnegotiable. Brett Kavanaugh has yet to prove that he deserves to join our all-powerful and absolute United States Supreme Court.
