Shabby treatment of a national hero

It is shameful and abhorrent that Donald Trump disrespected such a great man and patriot as John McCain. Sen. McCain proved his patriotism and love of country for over five years while held as a POW in North Vietnam and by serving our nation for decades in the House and Senate. What has Mr. Trump done to show his love of country? Dodge the draft. Yet he feels the right to insult such a great man.

Not a single word of recognition or praise for John McCain from our president. The John S. McCain National Defense Authorization Act was named for Sen. McCain, yet in signing it, Mr. Trump would not mention McCain's name - not even once.

Trump's delay in signing the proclamation to keep our flag at half-staff after McCain' death again shows contempt. Mr. Trump's generic condolences to the McCain family are so disingenuous that everyone can see just how hollow his words are.

I am a registered Democrat, but I believe that respect and honor are due to those who earn it, regardless of political party. Though I disagreed with Sen. McCain's political stance, I respected him and his ethical and honorable behavior.

Sadly, I cannot say I have any respect for Mr. Trump.

It's both sad and infuriating to see our president act like a petulant, entitled, bratty child. Sen. McCain was known and respected around the globe. The world will see the actions of our president and know just how low a human can go. He may be in the top 1 percent financially, but he is certainly in the lowest 1 percent of humanity.
