Summit is a giant step in the right direction

Some media outlets have been critical of Donald Trump's recent summit with Kim Jong Un, claiming that he didn't create a satisfactory denuclearization deal, and glossed over important issues like human rights.

But these claims miss the point. The very fact that a U.S. president met with the North Korean leader is a huge step in the right direction.

We should not expect the whole issue to be resolved through one summit. Lots of time and many more sit-downs between leaders will be necessary before a reasonable deal can be reached. Until then, the best thing we can do is strengthen relations between the two countries. The last thing anyone wants is for there to be a Cold War between the U.S. and North Korea because of leaders who choose to name-call instead of sit down for discussions.

After a series of tumultuous exchanges earlier this year, it is truly a good thing that the leaders can now sit and calmly negotiate. Hopefully, there are many more talks to come, and therefore plenty of opportunities for progress to be made on important issues like denuclearization and human rights.
