No need to regulate rent in Illinois

Presently, the General Assembly in Springfield is considering several rent control bills. While the idea may sound appealing, especially if you're a renter, rent control laws have been shown to have a detrimental effect on housing in the long run, primarily by reducing availability. Perhaps our legislators should focus more on controlling the government's appetite for higher and higher taxes and less on telling the private sector what it can charge for goods and services. In a free market, supply and demand will effectively regulate rent. What regulates taxation?
