Letter incorrectly identified firearms

I'm writing regarding the article titled "Gun groups file lawsuit over Deerfield's new ban." A while back someone on the pro-gun control side of the argument called for honesty in discussions of the topic. So let's be honest: How about using the correct term for firearms?

In the recent article and in every other newspaper article that I have seen on the subject, the incorrect term "assault weapon" is used to purposely sway public opinion toward opposition to the Second Amendment. An "assault rifle" is one that has been manufactured with the capacity to fire in fully automatic mode.

This type of firearm was not used in the Parkland Florida mass murder or any other recent mass murder committed with a firearm. Maybe it's just that the people writing the article know nothing about firearms, in which case the editors should prevent articles from going to print like that.

Or maybe it's being purposefully dishonest, since the term is misused so often in the media when reporting on the gun control.
