It's time to televise Mount Prospect park board meetings

In March of 2013, three Mount Prospect Park District board member (candidates) stated they believe transparency with taxpayers is key to providing an open form of government, an area each would strive to improve if elected in April 2013.

Raymond Massie said he wished board meetings were broadcast on the local public access channel. Bill Starr said he thought cameras should be turned on for meetings. Candidate Steve Kurka also said he was in favor of board meetings being televised.

Now, five years and two board member elections later, still no televised meetings! What is the delay? Do these commissioners believe the voters have short memories? Or maybe they think we, the voters, don't care. Oh yes, we do!

They can spend more than $8 million on their "white elephant" golf course that only about 9 percent of district residents utilize. I am sure that a much higher percentage of residents would be interested in seeing on TV what their commissioners are planning and how much more the taxpayers will have to cough up.

The park district now has a new executive director in Mr. Dan Malartsik. He claims 21 years of experience in parks and recreation. He is "excited to bring his passion and enthusiasm to the park district."

"I look forward to working with the park board of commissioners in serving our residents."

I hope he is more sincere than the board members named earlier. Truth is in transparency and transparency means board meetings being televised. Time to turn on the lights, cameras and the transparency that the taxpayers deserve to see and be a part of.
