Beware when flying pets

Humans' capacity to be stupid, careless and unconcerned about animals is incredible. How can anyone with a brain allow a 10-month-old puppy to be stored in the overhead compartment of a United Airlines plane? I've traveled with cats several times, always in carriers. Once, two of my cats sharing a single carrier weren't unloaded at O'Hare, our destination. Had I not protested, loudly and determinedly, my cats would've ended up in London, the plane's next stop. The Daily Herald's March 14 story reported that last year, 24 animals died while being transported on major U.S. airlines. Sixteen of those deaths occurred on United Airlines. Pet owners, beware.
