After reflection, Farleys get behind District 57 tax increase

The District 57 referendum submitted for voter approval on March 20 presents a real dilemma for seniors of Mount Prospect, young parents of District 57 and for the school board itself.

On one hand, the District 57 board has presented a strong case as to why additional funds are needed to maintain an excellent school system. However, many retirees can absorb only so much in the way of increased property taxes. Young families have horrendous expenses to look forward to in educating their children, and, by necessity, must spend wisely to prepare for their own retirement.

Thanks to a legislature that seems capable of accomplishing very little, too many taxing bodies depend almost totally upon real estate taxes for their primary funding. This points out the need for a taxing formula that lessens dependence upon property taxes to fund various levels of government.

Most seniors recognize good schools, libraries, park districts, village services, etc. are important inducements to attract people to a community. People move to this community because of the quality of our schools. Thus, a desirable market is created for seniors wishing to sell their homes. However, some seniors find their cost to help maintain this market, difficult.

After considerable reflection, my wife and I have decided to support this referendum. We do so, not because we have excess funds, but because we believe the school board has done its homework diligently and convinced us of their need, and to help maintain Mount Prospect as a desirable community to call home.

We like it here, as do many others, and do not wish to move. We also wish to see Mount Prospect retain its reputation of excellent schools, thus we are willing to provide our share of additional funds District 57 needs to remain in that category.
