Give more than lip service to decency

The recently published "Our democracy is at a crossroads" by Karen Wagner in "Your Views" makes the interesting point that there are "evil forces" influencing our president and other branches of government.

I would like to observe that evil forces are and have been influencing our presidents and other branches of government for decades. It is commonplace for news reports to be filled with examples of man's inhumanity to man, sexual harassment, immoral acts and dishonesty in every imaginable form. We are becoming desensitized to this.

Government's solution is to form a committee to explore a problem and then let petty bickering and factions debate any conclusion. It appears morality and respect for human life and dignity are de-emphasized under the separation of church and state position.

Posting the Ten Commandments and Spiritual and Corporal Works of Mercy on street corners is not feasible. Every individual needs to develop a "code of conduct." This code has been built into our DNA by our creator but needs to be nourished by family and supported by others, not suppressed or denigrated.

The entertainment and advertising industries are sending the wrong message promoting power, possessions and pleasure. We should give more than lip service to promoting a society and culture based on truth and good works.
