Stop sending pols to catastrophe sites

This writer believes it is time to call a halt to the expectation of visits, to the scenes of American catastrophe, by top-level dignitaries such as the state governor, the president, or vice-president of these United States.

The visits serve no practical purpose, only one of a nice photo-op and, in many cases serve as a distraction from the work which yet needs accomplished. This practice is, in my view, purely political, and we surely have enough of that.

Some may feel the need for "support," an emotional sense of not being alone, the perception that our leaders care. Yet, apart from the distractions, the financial cost, to us, the taxpayers, is huge. None of these visiting dignitaries travel alone, rather come with a retinue of vehicles, staff, and secret service people, not to mention the local requirements for their safety. Pulling local law enforcement into the visit removes them from where they are most needed, the catastrophe at hand.

It's time to say "stop" to this practice. There are federal agencies, such as FEMA, whose job remains assisting at overwhelming natural, or man-made disasters, and our leaders are best positioned to assure that these agencies are properly staffed and funded, as well as prepared. This assurance management can best be accomplished from the office, through intermediaries. Stop wasting time, and money, for "feel good" personal appearances, and simply help those responsible do their jobs.
