Recalling childhood joys of May Day

When I was a child growing up in Crystal Lake many years ago, May Day had no political connotations. It was a joyful day to celebrate spring.

We made May Baskets out of construction paper, paper doilies if available, paste, crayons and scissors. We went to the woods and picked violets and lilies of the valley. We put the flowers, maybe some candy or an anonymous note, into the May Basket and hung them at the doors of "special friends." We rant the doorbell and ran! One of my baskets always went to my neighbor who let me comb and brush her cocker spaniel, Mitzie.

I taught third grade in Denver for 30 years and we made May Baskets once again. This was the only time the kids were encouraged to ring someone's doorbell and run.

Happy May Day to you all.
