Xfinity Mobile rollout allows data limit changes via app

Comcast's new Xfinity Mobile wireless phone service piggybacks on the Verizon network and allows customers to change their wireless plan using an app.

Xfinity Mobile combines Verizon's 4G LTE network with Xfinity's Wi-Fi network, which has more than 17 million hot spots nationwide and more than 1.6 million in the region.

Comcast, which has its Midwest headquarters in Schaumburg, has previously partnered with other services to offer wireless. But it didn't control the selling and services portion at those times, said Comcast spokeswoman Amanda Vallejo.

Xfinity Mobile online launched in May and will roll out market by market nationwide through its retail stores. The company recently launched the service via its stores in Crystal Lake, Oak Brook, Orland Park, Vernon Hills, Merrillville, Indiana and Chicago's Lakeview neighborhood. More stores are expected to open in the next few weeks, she said.

Xfinity Mobile is available to existing and new Xfinity internet customers.

Customers can receive 100 megabytes of data shared across all the lines on the account. Two options are available. One is unlimited for $45 per month per line through July 31, available for up to five lines. After July 31, the price on the unlimited plan is $65 per month per line. The second option has a set price of $12 per gigabyte of shared cellular data across all lines on an account each month.

Using the Xfinity Mobile app, customers can switch from "By the Gig" to "Unlimited" plans at any time during their billing cycle for no additional cost and then switch back to "By the Gig" at the beginning of the next billing cycle.

"Customers can easily switch back-and-forth between data options at any time during the month via the Xfinity Mobile app," Vallejo said.
