Mundelein officials were joined by community members and U.S. Rep. Brad Schneider on Thursday to celebrate the creation of a public gathering space in the downtown area.
Equipped with picnic tables, planters, a walkway and other amenities, the space is on Park Street east of Route 45 -- the same block the village shuts down each spring so restaurants there can serve customers at tables set up on the roadway.
Officials hope the space will complement the outdoor dining area and be its own attraction.
Schneider, a Highland Park Democrat whose 10th District includes Mundelein, secured federal funds for the project.
