Rep. Schneider accepting submissions for congressional art contest

Members of Congress across Illinois and the nation are holding annual art competitions this spring - and U.S. Rep. Brad Schneider of Highland Park is no exception.

Schneider, who represents the suburban 10th District, is encouraging local high school students to submit pieces for the contest.

This year's theme is "Liberty and Justice for All."

The winning submission will be exhibited in the U.S. Capitol for one year. Second- and third-place pieces will be displayed in the Schneider's offices in Lincolnshire and Washington, D.C.

"The congressional art competition decorates the halls of Congress each year with representation from every corner of the United States," Schneider said in a news release. "Students' works will serve to lift up our workplace and our politics."

Submissions will be judged by a panel of local educators and artists.

"I'm looking forward to reviewing the many remarkable entries interpreting this year's theme," said Schneider, whose district includes parts of Cook, Lake and McHenry counties.

Artwork cannot be larger than 26 inches high, 26 inches wide and 4 inches deep. Pieces should be framed, or at least matted, to protect them and make transportation easier.

The submission deadline is 5 p.m. April 20.

Winners will be announced May 5. A reception is planned for May 7, at the College of Lake County in Grayslake.
