A Waukegan woman who police said crashed into a tree after fleeing a traffic stop remained hospitalized Monday, authorities said.

Lake County sheriff's police say Vanessa Pimentel, 27, of the 100 block of South Butrick Street, was stopped for speeding about 3:05 a.m. Sunday on Route 173 near Joanna Avenue in Zion. Pimental was driving a 2013 BMW 3-Series 81 mph in a 40 mph zone, sheriff's police said.

As the deputy was speaking to her, Pimental drove away east on Route 173 at a high speed, according to the sheriff's office. The deputy did not pursue, but later found the BMW crashed at Route 173 and Gilboa Avenue in Zion.

Pimentel suffered significant injuries authorities said. She is charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, fleeing and eluding, driving with a revoked license and aggravated speeding, sheriff's police said. A court date is pending.
