Bus depot proposed for former concrete plant in Des Plaines

A transportation company that operates throughout the Northwest suburbs wants to establish a school bus depot in Des Plaines.

Chicago-based Transport Properties envisions creating a dispatch facility at 580 S. Wolf Road. The 8.5-acre site last was occupied by the Meyer Material concrete plant.

Transport Properties has proposed buying the site, located in the city's 4th Ward, and razing the structures there.

The First Student bus company would be the tenant, city documents indicate. It would store about 200 buses there.

A city conditional use permit and zoning code variations concerning parking, landscaping, fences and other matters have been requested.

During a public discussion of the proposal by the city council last month, some people expressed concerns about safety, noise, traffic and other issues, city officials said.

The city council is expected to revisit the plan when it meets Monday. That session is set for 7 p.m. at city hall, 1420 Miner St.

The meeting will be livestreamed at desplaines.org and broadcast on local cable Channel 17.
