USA women's soccer team upset by Canada (and other local results)

For the second straight Olympics, the United States women's soccer team will not be going for gold. Five years getting bounced by Sweden in the quarterfinals, the U.S. lost to Canada 1-0 on Monday when Jessie Fleming converted on a penalty kick in the 74th minute.

Carli Lloyd had a chance to tie it 12 minutes later, but her shot hit the crossbar.

"That wasn't good enough," said Lloyd, the oldest player on the U.S. team at 39.

Canada, ranked eighth in the world, beat the U.S. for the first time since 2001.

Naperville's Casey Krueger is a reserve and did not play.

The U.S. will play for the bronze on Thursday in Kashima against Australia.

• The U.S. women's volleyball team, which features to local athletes in Kelsey Robinson (Bartlett) and Lauren Carlini (Aurora), prevailed in an intense match against Italy 21-25, 25-16, 25-27, 25-16, 15-12. The U.S. won its pool by going 4-1 and will face the Dominican Republic in the quarterfinals at 11 p.m. CDT on Tuesday.

• Sandi Morris of Downers Grove failed to qualify for the pole vault finals. She cleared 4.4 meters on her first attempt but was unable to fly over the 4.55-meter bar in three attempts. The USA has two medal hopes in the final - Katie Nageotte from Cleveland and Morgann Leleux from Louisiana.

• Wilmette's Maggie Shea just missed qualifying for the medal race in the women's 49erFX.
