Alzolay still searching for right approach to lefties

Adbert Alzolay's struggle with left-handed hitters continued Tuesday when he gave up 2 home runs to Joey Votto and one to Jesse Winker, all from the left side of the plate. He talked about what went wrong after the game.

"I just feel those 3 home runs to lefties, I missed my spot with the pitch," Alzolay said. "I have so small room for errors, I think whenever I make that error, I live that pitch in the strike zone in a hitter's count, they're always going to make me pay."

According to the play-by-play, the 3 home runs came against a slider, sinker and cutter, in that order. Baseballsavant.com had Alzolay throwing his sinker most often Tuesday, followed by the slider, changeup and cutter.

Overall, he gave up 4 runs in 5 innings pitched, which isn't terrible, but he knows there's a need to keep adjusting his approach to lefties.

"I feel we just need to keep working on making those adjustments with lefties," he said. "I feel I need to start using the other side of home plate a little more so the hitters can have a different view of the ball and not always looking middle-inside.

"I think just giving the lefties different looks at the ball, going backdoor slider, using the changeup more, like I did today at the end of the game. I feel that I will have a little bit more room to go inside with my other pitches against those lefties."
