Girls soccer: Wauconda claims NLCC title

Wauconda has done it again - another Northern Lake County Conference championship on the girls soccer field.

The Bulldogs have won five conference titles in a row including four straight in the NLCC and the final year of the North Suburban Conference Lake Division.

Wauconda got goals from Rosalie Wisniewski and Belle Johnson as it shut out host Grayslake Central 2-0 on Thursday night.

The Bulldogs (8-5-2 overall) finished 5-0-1 in the league, while Lakes (4-1-1) lost to Round Lake 1-0 on Thursday afternoon.

They also didn't allow a goal during conference play with the efforts of keeper Mackenzie Arden, which matched the 2017 season.

"This one feels real sweet," Wauconda coach Beau Shogren said. "One, coming out of the pandemic and two, there's so many new players on this team and there's so many sophomores playing big roles. We have kids that haven't played varsity soccer before this year. It all starts in the back. If we can keep finding a way to sneak in a couple of goals a game, we feel real good about playing against anybody."

Rosalie Wisniewski broke a scoreless tie in the 45th minute with her third goal of the year after taking a pass from her younger sister Kenna from the end line.

"It did skip on the turf and I hit it one time with my left foot," Wisniewski said. "I try to hit with both feet if I have to. But, I'm right-footed. I knew I had to score for us."

Johnson added the other Bulldogs' goal in the 80th minute off a rebound for the 2-goal difference.

The Rams (10-12, 3-3) are battle-tested and ready for the postseason that begins next week. They will finish out the regular season with a matchup against Lake Zurich on Saturday.

"Since the beginning of the season, all we wanted was these girls to play beautiful soccer and move the ball," Grayslake Central coach Keith Anderson said. "They're starting to do that. It might have taken 20 games, but they're getting their rhythm. We're looking forward to the sectional and hopefully it makes a difference, so we can make a run."
