Wauconda girls soccer coach Beau Shogren sent an email out to basketball standout Ella Karg with an invitation to come and join the girls soccer team this spring.

What a great idea since Karg had played soccer before high school.

Karg has fit in on the back line playing center back and has helped bolster the Bulldogs' defense.

In a defensive battle, Wauconda played visiting Lakes to a scoreless draw on Thursday night, leaving each school tied at 3-0-1 in the Northern Lake County Conference race.

"It's a game-changer," Shogren said. "I just don't see any other option back there. We had this new player that walked in that had played some soccer in middle school a little bit. Maybe, we would put her up at forward and have her run a little bit. But, we saw her practicing and decided to have her play center back. She's been a godsend for sure."

Karg has joined with Samira Khobdeh at center back, along with Tru Pfeiffer and Kayla McCarthy, and has helped a great deal defensively for Wauconda (5-5-2).

"I used to play soccer from when I was 4 to about eighth grade," Karg said. "I ended up leaving soccer because I wanted to focus on basketball. I figured, why not, it's my senior year and give it shot. It's been fun and all the girls have been supportive."

Lakes also played good defense all game long, even though the Eagles lost their goalkeeper, Caitlin Pron, to a first half injury. Sam Drake filled in the rest of the way and preserved the shutout.

"Hopefully, we can carry through Grayslake Central and Round Lake, "Lakes coach Kevin Kullby said. "We still have to do our part."
