Suburban barbershop chorus is keeping Valentine's Day tradition alive

A barbershop chorus known for its performances throughout the Northwest suburbs will serenade lovers during a drive-through Valentine's Day concert in Palatine.

A quartet from the Arlingtones Barbershop Chorus will sing two love songs to each vehicle that enters the Palatine Gateway Center Garage from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 14.

"We can drive through for a burger and fries, a coffee or soft drink, so why not for a singing valentine?" said Jerry Reed, the group's chorus manager.

The event will be a first for the Arlington Heights-based chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society, which has been entertaining audiences for nearly seven decades. Their repertoire includes everything from show tunes to spiritual numbers, and from patriotic songs to contemporary classics. They're known for their surprise, traveling singing valentines this time of year, but the pandemic had them thinking outside the box.
