Chicago man faces reckless homicide charge in fatal Aurora crash
A Chicago man has been charged with reckless homicide in connection with a Saturday crash involving a car fleeing Aurora police, authorities said..
Kane County Judge Michael Noland set bail at $250,000 Monday for Kevon T. Bonner, 19, of the 7800 block of South South Shore Drive. Bonner faces two counts of reckless homicide; one count of illegal possession of a handgun; one count of leaving the scene of a personal-injury accident; three counts of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon; and one count of illegal possession of ammunition.
He is also charged with receiving or possessing a stolen motor vehicle, driving with a revoked or suspended license and fleeing or eluding police, Noland said in a bond call televised via Zoom.
Police say Bonner was the driver of a Dodge Charger that crashed into a minivan Saturday afternoon while eluding police who were investigating a gun-related call.
Aurora police say they were called to a parking lot on the 1200 block of Coventry Place for a report of multiple people with guns. When they arrived, a white Dodge Charger left.
Other officers saw a white Charger driving fast on Indian Trail, and reported that it drove through a red light at Lake Street (Route 31).
Less than a minute later, other officers found the Charger had crashed into a minivan at Ohio Street.
One passenger in the Charger was pronounced dead at the scene; the other died later at a hospital. Their identities have not been released.
Two people in the minivan sustained minor injuries.
Police said Bonner ran from the crash. A police dog found him a few minutes later in the yard of a nearby home.
Several guns were found in the wreckage, according to police.
Bonner has two pending cases in Cook County - one on charges of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, and another on a charge of writing a bad check, according to a prosecutor.
His next Kane County court date is Feb. 3.
To be freed from jail, he would need to post $25,000 bond.
