Cross country roundup: Warren's Wiley a regional champ
Warren's Luke Wiley ran a 15:26.34 to win the Class 3A Grant boys cross country regional on Saturday.
Rounding out the top five were Jason Polydoris (Highland Park), Ian Barnes (Cary-Grove), Liam Tucker (Libertyville) and Nate Wehner (Highland Park). Libertyville won the team race with 49 points, followed by Warren, Highland Park, Grant and Cary-Grove.
In the girls' race, Grant's Aly Negovetich clocked a 17:33.59 to win. She was followed by Skyler Kreunen of Lake Forest, Isabella Marsico of Lake Forest, Audrey Luell of Zion-Benton and Sheila Tucker of Libertyville.
At Rockford Guilford, Huntley won the girls' title with 42 points, followed by Hononegah, Jacobs, Dundee-Crown and Rockford Auburn. Michelle Gasmund of Guilford was the individual winner in 18:42, followed by Kelly Carpenter of Jacobs. Huntley's Breanna Burak, Molly Allen and Brittney Burak finished 3-4-5.
Jacobs won the boys' race with 49 points. Huntley, DeKalb, Hononegah and Auburn were 2-5. DeKalb's Riley Newport finished in 15:53.96 to take first place. The top five was rounded out by Peter Maculan of Auburn, Andrew Doetsch of Jacobs, Alex Boyden from DeKalb and Connor Maloney of Jacobs.
Brooke Stromsland took first place in a time of 17:31.1 as Lakes' girls won the title at Antioch with 50 points, nipping Vernon Hills by two points. Bella Domier of Grayslake Central was second, followed by Rachel Soukup of Prairie Ridge, Anna Todd of Vernon Hills and Jessie Pakaski of Wauconda. Grayslake Central was third as a team, Prairie Ridge fourth and Wauconda fifth.
In the boys' race, Bryan Vale's 15:54.7 winning time lifted Grayslake Central to the team title with 47 points. Will Gelon of Prairie Ridge was second, Trey Sato of GC third. Armani Diaz of Grayslake North fourth and Ales Utsis of Vernon Hills fifth. VH took second as a team, Lakes third, PR fourth and Wauconda fifth.
At St. Francis, Benet won the boys' title with 35 points. St. Francis, Fenwick, Glenbard South and Hinsdale South finished 2-5. The individual winner was Julian Watson of Hinsdale South in a time of 16:00.2. He was followed by Niklas Anderson of Benet, Luke Orwig of St. Francis, Zac Daley of Fenwick and Grayden Rill of Fenwick.
In the girls' race, Louisa Diamond's 19:04.1 led Benet to the title with 19 points. She was followed by Elisabeth Camic of Benet, Bella Daley of Fenwick, Kelly Andrews of Benet and Joy Jackson of Benet.
Mathew Olech (16:37.27) and Daniel Winkelman (16:43.35) finished 1-2 as Harvest Christian's boys won their own regional. with 34 points. Aurora Central Catholic, Northridge Prep, Wheaton Academy, and Montini rounded out the top five.
Rohn Ritchie of ACC, Hayden Colclasure of Harvest and Nick Fisch of Montini were the 3-4-5 individual finishers.
In the girls' race, IC Catholic Prep was the team champ with 28 points. Rosary, Wheaton Academy, Harvest Christian and ACC finished 2-5. Rosary's Lianna Surtz (19:30.36) won the race, followed by Carly Manchester (IC), Julia Wolke (Christian Liberty), Kennedy Calcagno (IC) and Frankie Chaidez (IC).
