Officer fatally shots man, police later find dead woman

LAWRENCEBURG, Ind. (AP) - A southeastern Indiana police officer fatally shot a knife-wielding man early Saturday after he confronted the officer at an apartment complex where a woman's body was later found, police said.

A Lawrenceburg police officer called to the Summit Pointe Apartments to investigate a domestic disturbance shot the man when he engaged the officer with a knife in a hallway at the apartment complex, said Sgt. Stephen Wheeles of Indiana State Police.

Wheeles said officers provided medical attention to the man, but he died from his injuries at the scene in the city, located about 30 miles (48 kilometers) west of Cincinnati.

After the shooting, investigators began checking on nearby apartment units and officers found a woman dead inside one of the units from an apparent homicide, Wheeles told WCPO-TV.

'œWe do believe it's all connected, but at this point, it's going to be a long investigation until we can try to put all these pieces together of what actually occurred,'ť Wheeles said.

Police continue investigating the incidents and it was not immediately known if the man and woman lived together. But investigators said they both had addresses at the Summit Pointe Apartments.

Authorities have not released the names of the man and woman.
