Police fatally shoot man allegedly fleeing earlier incident

CHICAGO (AP) - Chicago police officers responding Friday to a report of shots fired fatally shot a man they say was fleeing the scene of the gunshots in the city's Little Village neighborhood.

Chief of Operations Brian McDermott said officers tried to stop an auto with three passengers people, but it crashed into a light pole. The driver, described as a 25-year-old man, ran from the scene.

The alleged unidentified suspect and police were involved in an ``armed encounter,'Å¥ with police wounding the man, McDermott said. He didn't say if the man fired shots or pointed a gun at police. The man was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later died.

Two handguns, a revolver and semi-automatic pistol, were recovered at two locations, McDermott said.

Another male in the auto was arrested, but a female fled and is not in custody.

After the suspect was shot, police found a victim from the original call of shots fired with a graze wound to the head, authorities said. The unidentified man was hospitalized in good condition.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability, which investigates the use of force by Chicago police, is investigating the shooting, and the officers involved will be placed on administrative duties for 30 days, according to authorities.
