Intense heat could cause buckled roads, uneven surfaces

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Illinois transportation officials are warning motorists to watch for damaged roads during intense heat.

'œOne of the hottest weeks of the year means the potential for pavement failures will increase,'ť said Omer Osman, acting transportation secretary. 'œAt IDOT, we have the necessary staffing and materials in place to make repairs as quickly as possible.

Illinois is broiling with temperatures in the 90s, from Chicago to Cairo.

'œWe ask the public to stay alert and avoid driving over buckled roads, if possible, while giving our crews plenty of room to work,'ť Osman said Monday.

Pavement failures can be reported by calling (800) 452-4368 or 911.
