USC Upstate names new women's basketball coach

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) - A South Carolina university has a new coach for its women's basketball program.

University of South Carolina Upstate has named Becky Burke to replace Tammy George, who was head coach for 15 years. George resigned in May as the program's all-time winningest coach, The Spartanburg Herald-Journal reported.

Burke was head coach of Division II, the University of Charleston in West Virginia, for two years. She compiled a 48-14 record there, including their first NCAA tournament appearance since 2014.

'œI felt like USC Upstate was a place where we could win before I even came on my campus visit,'ť Burke said in a news release from the university. 'œAnd after visiting, that was confirmed for me. It comes down to that simply. This is a place where we can recruit because of the campus support and resources and I think the conference is winnable.'ť

'œFrom my first phone call with her, I felt her tremendous energy, contagious enthusiasm, personal charisma and commitment to excellence in all facets of running a collegiate basketball program. I have no doubt she will lead our program to new heights,'ť USC Upstate Athletics Director Daniel Feig said in the release.

USC Upstate was 10-20 overall last season and 3-15 in the Big South Conference.
