Chicago Fire takes next step toward full training

Chicago Fire players have been cleared to begin voluntarily training in small groups starting Friday, the club announced Thursday.

The move marks the next step toward resuming Major League Soccer play. The MLS season was suspended March 12 due to the COVID-19 pandemic after the Fire collected a loss and a draw in its first two games.

Players will only be allowed to train with specifically assigned groups. The Fire hopes to move to full team training sessions soon.

The Fire's plan is in accordance with Illinois' Phase 3 recovery plan.

The league and the MLS Players Association on Wednesday completed a new collective bargaining agreement that includes plans for the league to host a tournament for all teams in Orlando as part of resuming the 2020 season. Details on the tournament are not yet available.
