Gurnee-area man identified as victim of deadly shooting

A Gurnee-area man who was gunned down late last week likely was killed during an illegal drug transaction, police said.

Elliot Jones, 21, was fatally shot Saturday night near his house on the 36900 block of North Grandwood Drive. The Lake County coroner's office released Jones' name Tuesday.

Jones was shot during a meeting with the person who shot him, police said. On Tuesday, Lake County sheriff's Sgt. Chris Covelli said the meeting likely was drug-related.

The gunman fled after the shooting. As of Tuesday, no arrests have been made.

Jones was taken from the scene to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy conducted Tuesday revealed Jones died of a gunshot wound. Toxicology results are pending, the coroner's office said.

Although similar in nature, Jones' death isn't related to Thursday's fatal shooting of 18-year-old Gavile Jackson in Mundelein, Covelli said. That case also is believed to be drug-related.

No arrests have been made in that case, either, police said.
